Buffalo Ridge — Avon, CO

Location: Avon, CO

Project Description:

This project consists of 15 buildings and 244 units total. Units are Studios, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom units. The project is a HUD project (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) and so the budget was extremely tight and meeting this budget was of great importance. The mechanical system design was tailored to meet this budget, meet code as well as the needs of the occupants. Each building has a two-boiler central heating plant which serves two domestic hot water heaters, as well as hydronic baseboard within the units and common areas. Each boiler consists of 2 heating stages thus there are four stages of heat per building, contributing to better levels of energy efficiency. Because all the buildings face south, the project team elected to provide through-the-wall air conditioners for summer comfort. Other systems include corridor ventilation, bath exhaust and dryer exhaust.

Claridge on Turtle Creek

Location: Dallas, TX

Project Description:

Rader Engineering provided mechanical design services for this high end condominium project located in Dallas Texas. The mechanical systems consisted of a total of 8 water-to-air heat pumps (totaling 31 tons), which were connected to the building’s existing boiler/ tower loop. The units were all located in mechanical closets remote from the rooms that they served, and all ductwork was lined with 1-1/2” of internal duct insulation, to minimize any acoustical transmission issues associated with the heat pumps. All supply and return air was via slot diffusers integrated into the elaborate ceilings. Steam humidification units were incorporated into the HVAC system to meet the Owner’s humidity needs. The entire system was controlled by a Direct Digital Control (DDC) system integrated into the Home Automation System.

High Aspen Ranch Residence

Location: Garfield County, CO

Project Description:

Rader Engineering provided mechanical engineering services for this high-end custom home in High Aspen Ranch. The project consisted of two phases (two buildings) that were connected by a connector bridge. The home is heated and cooled by a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system connected to 40 vertical boreholes, each 250’ deep. In total, there are four 10 ton water-to-water GSHPs in the project, totaling 40 tons. Special attention was paid to properly attenuating sound generated by the mechanical systems, as this was a high priority for the Owners. Sound mitigating strategies include vibration isolators for fans, piping and ductwork as well as Variable Frequency Drives

(VFDs) for optimal fan coil control. The home is equipped with a sophisticated DDC control system. Multiple air-to-air heat exchangers are utilized to provide efficient and balanced fresh air exchange in the home. Both phases include a whole house exhaust fan used for general ventilation and for free nighttime cooling. Special exhaust and ventilation systems were designed for the woodworking shop, fabrication and finishing rooms. All of the garages are provided with exhaust ventilation for improved indoor air quality and health. Domestic hot water is generated by GSHP preheat ing as well as by high efficiency gas-fired condensing boilers.
